The Seventh Air Force Super Squadron test continues. For more information, read the Seventh Air Force article.
Seventh Air Force’s Super Squadron test is a temporary movement of F-16 aircraft and personnel within the Republic of Korea, from Kunsan Air Base to Osan AB, to test and validate the concept of a “Super Squadron’s” ability to improve sortie generation, training, and readiness while reducing manpower and logistics support requirements – thus optimizing combat capabilities.
The initial year-long test saw initial success, and Seventh Air Force was approved for a second phase by the Chief of Staff of the Air Force on April 7, 2025. In Phase II, which will begin October 2025, a second super squadron of F-16s from Kunsan AB will be established at Osan AB.
NEW UPDATES July 23, 2025
To support an on-time start for the Super Squadron Phase 2 test, Air Force Personnel Center is strategically diverting talent from bases across the globe to Osan. As a result, the initial assessment of personnel departing Kunsan for the test has shrunk from approximately 300 to approximately 60. These 60 Airmen will see assignments to Osan loaded as a “Continuation of Tour,” to preserve their original DEROS and follow-on assignments.
Commanders are actively notifying Airmen affected by these updates and will continue to provide constant support to ensure no one is left behind in this transition. Airmen who receive assignment RIPs or other information that does not match what commanders are communicating should inform their leadership immediately for appropriate action.
Airmen not identified as a divert or Continuation of tour may volunteer for a new Osan assignment – those interested should inform their chain of command. As the new Super Squadron becomes fully operationally capable, some remaining Kunsan Airmen may see their assignments curtailed – they will still receive short-tour credit and will retain their follow-on assignments.
