The system includes a 1.25-inch steel cable attached to 1,200 feet of the nylon tape wrapped in a large metal reel. The holes allow for the attachment of a connector that hooks to a steel cable strung across the flight line. The nylon tape that is used has a lifespan of approximately four years, but needs to be flipped every two years due to normal wear and tear. Civil Engineers perform this maintenance to prevent the tape from improperly snapping and potentially causing severe damage to the aircraft in the event of an in-flight emergency.
