Military Family Life Consultants: Total care for today's changing force Published May 25, 2012 By Tech. Sgt. Joy Meek 8th Fighter Wing Public Affairs KUNSAN AIR FORCE BASE, Republic of Korea -- While stationed at Kunsan, family separation compiled with increased workloads can mean increased stress and communication difficulties for service members. Sometimes, outside intervention is needed to overcome these life obstacles. Fortunately, there are many avenues for Airmen to choose from, but one relatively new program offers unique alternatives. The Military Family Life Consultant Program offers an alternate source for counseling services through Kunsan's Airman and Family Readiness Center. The MFLC provides short term, situational, problem-solving services to service members and their families. What that means for Airmen is the ability to receive confidential counseling and support on a wide range of issues resulting from the stresses of life - most of which are often the result of adapting to military demands. This could include anything from relationships, parenting, anger management, finance, home sickness and decision-making. Counselors are trained and certified to assist with the unique military lifestyle and provide appropriate avenues to assist Airmen in their time of need. One important advantage is the level of confidentiality, so much so that the counselor's identity cannot be revealed. In addition, no records are kept of the service member's issue or case. "We are confidential ... we do not keep records" said Kunsan's Miltary Family Life Consultant. "We are mandated reporters of: child abuse, domestic violence and sexual assault." What makes this program unique is the flexibility of appointment times and meeting locations. "I am flexible and meet at many different locations on base. I am available after hours and on weekends with prior notice. So, if an individual's schedule does not permit a week day interaction with me, I can make arrangements to meet with people at times more flexible to their schedule," said the MFLC. As licensed therapists, counselors are able to provide Airmen top quality assistance at the best price ... free. "As a supervisor and first sergeant having referred several people to the MFLC, I believe it's an invaluable asset and gives folks and alternative to more formal routes," said Master Sgt. Pablo Rivero, 8th Fighter Wing Staff Agencies/Comptroller Squadron first sergeant. For those wishing to contact their local MFLC, contact their Airmen and Family Readiness Center or First Sergeant. On Kunsan, Airmen can call DSN 782-2297 or by cell phone 010-4966-7317.
