The 8th Operations Support Squadron was recently named the Pacific Air Force's 2012 Airfield Operations Flight Complex of the Year at Kunsan Air Base, Republic of Korea.

According to 1st Lt. Nathan Hocking, 8th OSS, the flight's role is to provide safe and efficient air traffic service for Kunsan as well as ensure the safety and condition of the landing surface, airfield, and accompanying areas.

"It is my distinct pleasure to submit the airfield operations flight for the award of 'Airfield Operations Flight Complex of the Year,' Lt. Col. Samantha Weeks, 8th OSS commander wrote. "The Airfield Operations Flight performed continuously at the highest level throughout 2012. The 8th OSS AOF dominated during multiple operational readiness exercises and completed an airfield operations certification inspection all while ensuring the safety of more than 58,000 annual flights."

Flights within the 8th OSS comprise of the air traffic control tower, radar approach control facility, and airfield management operations. The 8th OSS AOF accounts for 51 of the 127 personnel in the 8th OSS and staffs three diverse facilities year round, noted Hocking.

"The airfield operations flight's innovative judgment and professional energy are testimony that they deserve this award," Weeks wrote. "The flight always puts 100 percent of their efforts into everything they do, and the result is a superior airfield operations complex."
