The 8th Security Forces Squadron held a ruck march to kick off National Police Week, May 13, at Kunsan Air Base, Republic of Korea.

More than 35, 8th SFS defenders volunteered to march three and a half miles from their squadron headquarters building to the base's highest point. The event was designed to honor those law enforcement and military police that died in the line of duty.

Staff Sgt. Jeffrey Self, 8th SFS defender, said he organized the event in hopes that it would bring his unit closer together.

"Everybody's away from their families during this short tour," Self explained. "It is good to come together as a team and support each other. Camaraderie is everything in this unit."

Once the defenders reached the highest point on base, known as "Big Coyote Hill," Lt. Col. Nathan Schalles, 8th SFS commander, spoke to them about National Police Week and held a moment of silence for all of their fallen comrades.

"We're here to defend the base," Schalles said. "It is a tough and important mission. We need to make sure we remember those who came before us."
