Q: Where is the resiliency program at Kunsan?

A: Scope-wise, the Resiliency program, per DAFI 90-5001, Integrated Resiliency, is a Commander’s Program. Therefore, it’s within the purview of each Squadron Commander. (Ref. 3.7.1; 3.7.2) to establish a robust resilience team.

Location-wise, the Integrated Resiliency Office (IRO) is at Bldg. 1305, Rm 245 (next to OG Conference Room). Hours of operation, M-F is 0800-1700.

1. Our main role is to link the Commanders/SELs with community resources to bridge capability gaps in their ongoing lines of efforts in the primary prevention of violence to include self-harm, and resilience. E.g. Event and conditioned-based learning like MRT, suicide prevention, etc., and other community outreach

HAF/DPFZ via PACAF A1Z is responsible for providing the training for MRTs and upon completion, award SEI code: 107 for Enlisted; YAB for Officer, and may wear the MRT patch on their uniform while performing MRT collateral duties. The installation IRO, our office, is responsible for training RTAs and nominating them to be MRT-trained to PACAF A1Z. (3.4.2.1; 3.4.2.2; 3.4.2.3)

Q: Why aren’t MRTs/RTAs advertising events via email or social media?

A: For our (Integrated Primary Prevention Workforce/IRO) part, while our primary key performance indicator is on training MRTs and RTAs, we have also led several social messaging on MRT/RTA events/activities that include but not limited to:

1. Word of mouth by existing MRTs and RTAs: Last event led by MRT MSgt McKinney, 8MXS, along with other MRTs/RTAs was this past September, during the Suicide Awareness and Prevention Month, where the team created signs of hope and stood outside the CAC during highest foot traffic of patrons. See attached pictures.
2. MRT/RTA patches: MRTs and RTAs wear their MRTs and RTAs patch as part of their UOD. Others have MRT/RTA embroidered on their jerseys.
3. Monthly KRO: We have either my staff or another MRT/RTA provide an overview of our Kunsan MRT/RTA as recruitment strategy
4. AFN: We have a recurring bi-monthly or monthly, 1-hr time slot with AFN where we and other invited helping agencies take turns to talk and promote various resilience and primary prevention of violence topics/events
5. Public Affairs KRUD: Trainings and major awareness events where MRTs/RTAs will also be involved are collaborated with PA for social awareness of events.
6. Monthly FTEC. We conduct 1 hour of Initial Wingman Intervention Training (I-WIT) on day 2 of FTEC, and all-day resiliency training on their last day (granted, current curriculum just changed). In September, MRTs/RTAs conducted the 6-hr FTEC-Resilience training.
7. Quarterly RTA trainings: IRO staff and MRTs conduct 3-day trainings to inculcate RTA-hopefuls. See attached pictures.
8. War Fighter Briefs: (as needed)
9. Email correspondences: Every day, we check our org email account: 8FW.Prevention&Resilience@us.af.mil, and even individual emails that our office sends out to identified MRTs/RTAs to join us in community-wide events/activities.
10. Community-wide outreach events: IRO/MRT would typically have a display table showcasing primary prevention of violence and MRT/RTA-related informationals as well as swags
11. Cold call and/or email newly arrived MRTs gleaned from personnel gain roster that we get from our POC at 8FSS.EOMPSM@us.af.mil
12. Office wear. My staff even wears IRO-logo collared shirts to work almost daily and especially when conducting briefings, classes, and other community-wide outreach event as social marketing so that anybody interested in RTA or MRT-related information, they’re right there ready to talk-up anything resiliency or primary prevention of violence.
13. For each Squadron Commander’s part, because they are responsible in establishing a robust resilience and integrated primary prevention team (3.7.1; 3.7.2), have the responsibility to:
    1. Ensure that all uniformed Airmen, Guardians, and DAF civilian personnel under their watch, complete any required resilience and IPP training, typically tracked by their Unit Training Managers/Monitors (3.2.1)
    2. Appoint in writing, their RTAs and MRTs and provide copies of appointment memo to the Wing IRO (for contingency and record keeping purposes). In turn, squadron-appointed MRTs/RTAs collaborate efforts with IRO and/or other Community Action Team (CAT) members like M&FRC, MH, HC in support of their Squadron Commanders/SELs, to action on their Unit’s comprehensive integrated prevention plan (CIPP) based on findings/results from their DEOCS.
    3. Delegate a MRT/RTA POC to coordinate with IRO, any resilience or primary prevention-related events/activities. E.g. Resilience Tactical Pause (RTP)

Q: How can we promote better wingmanship and a greater sense of community?

A: Wingmanship starts with each of us taking care of one another, both on and off duty. I encourage all leaders and Airmen to actively engage in unit activities, mentorship programs, and base-wide events. We will continue to support initiatives like squadron team-building events and community outreach programs to strengthen our bonds and foster a sense of belonging.

Q: How can we boost morale across the base?

A: Morale is a priority for the leadership team. We have been working closely with the Quality of Life Task Force to better the living conditions for Wolf Pack Airmen, and will continue to listen to your feedback. I encourage everyone to share ideas with their leadership, as it is a constant effort to make Kunsan a better place!

Q: What is the plan for Freedom Flag and surge weeks after Thanksgiving?

A: Current plan is flying ops for Freedom Flag, it will be over by the 7^th of November.

If asking about surge weeks, they mean the exercises, it will go according to planned by IG.

Q: Will Osan follow the same exercise schedule as Kunsan, or will it be separate?

A: Osan does not follow the same exercise schedule as Kunsan. However, Kunsan and Osan participate in some exercises together. These exercises are Ulchi Freedom Shield and Freedom Shield. Flying exercises like Freedom Flag is also an exercise Kunsan and Osan both participate.

Q: What is the plan for the exercise after Thanksgiving?

A: The exercise calendar is available for all to access on our SharePoint.

Q: Will neck gaiters and thick headbands be approved for use in cold weather while in uniform?

A: Good news! Black neckgaiters and cold weather headbands, are authorized cold weather accessories in DAFI 36-2903, however they do not replace headgear, therefore headgear still needs to be worn. 

 

Q: How will mandatory 5 days a week PT affect morale and duty hours? – OST

A: The Secretary of War’s guidance makes PT a priority, and I understand the concerns about balancing this with duty hours. I’ve empowered Group and Squadron Commanders to tailor their unit PT policies to meet the needs of their personnel while adhering to the new standards. I trust our leaders to implement PT in a way that supports both morale and mission readiness.

Q: Can PT be self-mandated during duty hours to accommodate different fitness needs? Allow our sq/cc’s to determine WOLF

A: The Wing PT policy allows Squadron Commanders flexibility to determine how PT is implemented within their units. If self-mandated PT aligns with your squadron’s mission and fitness goals, your Squadron Commander has the authority to make that decision. I trust our leaders to make the best choices for their teams.

Q: Why has Airmen for Life disappeared as the tempo slows down and we lose jets and personnel?

A: Airmen for Life is still available and is aligned under the 8 FW Installation Primary Preventative Workforce (IPPW) Office and is currently being offered at First Term Enlisted Course. Additionally, if your squadron is seeking a course, please reach out to the IPPW Office for scheduling.

Q: What are you doing as the Command Chief to develop the SNCO tier?

A: We’ve launched quarterly SNCO Fireside Chats focused on mentorship, accountability, and leading through transition. The goal is to empower SNCOs to bridge the gap between strategic intent and Airmen execution. Additional PME refreshers and leadership roundtables are held each quarter to sustain deliberate development; other opportunities surface where SNCOs have had the opportunity observe to further their understanding of how the Wing and Senior Leaders execute processes.

Q: Can we sell popcorn during Commander’s Call to raise funds?

A: Fundraisers during official formations like Commander’s Calls aren’t authorized, but squadrons can coordinate sales before or after events through their Private Org channels with FSS approval. Coordinate with 8 FSS/FSR for official guidance and scheduling.

Q: Can we turn hoochies into mini squadron gyms instead of drinking spaces?

A: Each facility conversion request must go through CE Real Property and Safety review. If approved, squadrons can fund equipment through unit morale funds or private org fundraising. Leadership supports any initiative that promotes health and readiness while maintaining safety and accountability standards.

Q: When can squadrons start the 2-mile diagnostic touched on at the award ceremony?

A: The diagnostic phase begins now and must be recorded and squadron overall statistics must be pushed to wing NLT 16 January 2026, allowing squadrons to test and collect baseline data. This gives Airmen time to adjust training plans before formal policy rollout later in the year.

Q: Can we count the January diagnostic as our real test, or do we have to wait until March?

A: The January diagnostic will serve as practice only. Official testing and score entry will begin in March 2026 per AFPC guidance. This ensures data consistency and allows sufficient time for Airmen prep and policy refinement.

Q: Why are SAFE kits only available at Osan? Can we get qualified personnel to maintain them locally?

A: BLUF: it is important that the facility has experienced staff & infrastructure to support all medical and legal requirements for completing sexual assault exams

It is common in the civilian sector to have one facility (usually an ER) in an area or region that provides the service. This system ensures improved concentration of experience & support to ensure a high quality system to provide these sensitive exams to avoid secondary trauma.

At Kunsan, we would not be able to maintain all program requirements including having multiple, appropriately trained staff that have completed the appropriate number of exams to maintain credentials as a forensic examiner.

Q: What will ACE look like for the Wing moving forward with aircraft leaving?

A: The 8 FW’s mission will not change; it will just look a little bit different.  In the past year, the 8 FW has conducted ACE missions to several COBs - sending our own jets, maintainers, logisticians, intelligence analysts, and many others critical specialties IOT stress test our operational readiness and ability to generate aircraft in austere locations.  Going forward, while during the Super Squadron Phase 2 test, 8 FW Amn may not conduct ACE missions with “Wolf Pack F-16s”, they will continue to support USFK or other HHQ exercises and ACE missions.  Additionally, the 8 FW will continue to execute our mission of “Accepting Follow-on Forces”, who are themselves conducting ACE missions to Kunsan AB.

 

Q: Why are we flying so much if the jets are leaving?

A: The 8 FW will continue to generate sorties and meet its Flying Hour Program obligations.  Additionally, we must continue to train, qualify, upgrade, and maintain currencies for pilots and other specialties.  This is a matter of National Security, Pen stability, and fulfilling our duties outlined in the National Defense Strategy.

Q: (FSS) Are there plans to expand the gym or improve strength training machines?

A: Even though we would love to support our members’ requests, equipment upgrades are driven by reports in the Fitness Equipment Inventory Database, which AFSVC uses for prioritization. Local budget covers maintenance primarily, so we utilize AFSVC's "wish list" to request equipment. We're also exploring facility expansion options, including Annex Fitness Facilities and an enclosed overhang on the green pad. Currently, we have the beaver fit available for use outside of the fitness center.

 

Q: (FSS) Can we have a certified 400m track for fitness tests? Shorter tracks cause confusion and slower times.

A: FSS and CES are currently working to certify 5 different testing tracks across the installation: the Amoeba track, the indoor track, the “donut” track by the Commissary, the Seawall track, and a new out-and-back on perimeter road. All weather tracks are built to last 12-20 years; once the amoeba or donut track reaches this lifespan, CES will reconsider a 400m track. 

 

Q: Can we get water bottles at the DFAC? The fill station water tastes funny.

A: Per DAFMAN 65-601V1, para 5.41. Bottled Water/Other Beverages. Bottled water is only authorized for procurement under 3500-MILPERS funding for flight meals due to the inaccessibility of potable water once airborne. Water may be purchased for flight meals ONLY. However, on the ground, portable water remains the responsibility of CES, which mandates adequate potable water at all work and living facilities. While the dining facilities are open for 16.5 hours per day on weekdays and 11.5 per day on weekends, 24/7 fountains are accessible at the Fitness Center, and respective work centers/dorm areas also house water fountains.

As part of routine maintenance, water filters at the DFAC were replaced on 28 October 2025. The MDG Bioenvironmental tests water on a regular basis and CES will continue to validate water quality results as conducted by the MDG.

 

Q: (FSS) Can the DFAC offer more drink options like lemonade, Dr. Pepper, and protein shakes?

A: Additional drink options, such as lemonade, are something that we are currently working on and have been for a few weeks, pending vendor availability and AFSVC approval. We have received some of the different flavors, but the machines have not yet arrived.

We are checking on Dr. Pepper to see if it’s currently being offered by our overseas Coke vendor.

Protein shakes are not included in the DAF Buyers Guide and do not align with the Go-4-Green menu standards.

 

Q: (FSS) Why doesn’t the DFAC serve chili mac anymore?

A: Chili Mac is not removed from the menu but is instead offered as part of our Legacy Program, which follows the Air Force’s standard 28-day rotational menu cycle. The Legacy Program ensures a diverse range of meals while maintaining balance and nutritional guidelines in line with the Essential Station Messing (ESM) program. Chili Mac is included on this rotation, but its availability may vary depending on the vendor’s supplies. We can always look into offering it more regularly if the demand is there. The last time it was offered was October 1st for lunch.

 

Q: Can we get healthier food options at the BX, like Muscle Maker Grill instead of Popeyes and Burger King?

A: The Exchange is always working to bring fresh offerings and popular restaurants to our Food Court. These options are not ones that is being discussed as an option at this time. However, we are always open to suggestions for new ideas.

Q: What is the process for adding new spices to the DFAC (e.g., Tajin)?

 

A: To add spices like Tajin, a request would need to be submitted to AFSVC for evaluation based on customer interest, cost, and food safety standards, since condiments are provided free of charge. If approved, we'd purchase it through our vendors or DECA. We encourage everyone to share suggestions through comment cards at the DFAC. However, keep in mind that relying on just one or two comments can sometimes misrepresent the actual desires of the majority. That's precisely why attending the DFAC's quarterly food forum is so important. It's a valuable opportunity to engage directly with food service leadership, share your preferences, and ensure your voice is heard, helping us accurately assess overall demand and enhance the dining experience for everyone.

 

Q: Can we offer a 24/7 grab-and-go option for meal card members?

A: Unfortunately, implementing this would necessitate additional register staffing, preparation, and a contract modification costing roughly $67K annually. Considering the base's ongoing downsizing due to S2P2 and the projected reduction in personnel, it's not prudent to pursue this expansion at this time.

 

Q: What is happening with members who KAIP’d but didn’t get selected to go to Osan?

A: We've consulted with the Operational Support Team (OST) and, while their resources are currently limited within the unit they are embedded with, they are prepared to offer a base-wide, 1-hour running clinic every Monday. They are currently working the best possible time for maximum participation. Furthermore, the OST can incorporate running education into their existing 8-hour PTL course or provide it as a standalone 2-hour course. We strongly encourage units to prioritize sending their PTLs to attend this, as this initiative aims to equip them with the knowledge to better advise their members during group PT sessions, enhancing overall physical fitness.

 

Q: What remedial PT tools are available on base to prepare for new standards?

A: The Fitness Center is working with the OST to update our Fitness Improvement Program, specifically to address the upcoming new fitness standards. The revised program, expected to be finalized by 7 Nov, will be distributed to unit UFPMs/PTLs, which includes proper warm-up/cool-down routines and workouts designed to improve performance on all PFA components.

Additionally, the Military OneSource Health and Wellness Coaching (https://www.militaryonesource.mil/benefits/health-wellness-coaching/) help create personalized fitness plans focused on weight management, stress reduction, and goal setting. This support system can indirectly aid in preparing for new physical standards by addressing individual weaknesses and promoting accountability, ultimately supporting improved physical performance.

The OST will provide their HAMR and 2-mile run program to offer UFPMs/PTLs guidance in helping members improve performance on these components.

 

Q: Can dorm residents decline full-size mattresses if they are leaving soon?

A: Dorm rooms are for long term usage, rooms will need new mattresses as they are swapped out. This process is independent of whether dorm residents will be leaving soon.

Q: Can we get a 7/11, GS25, or CU convenience store on base?

A: While we appreciate the desire for more convenience store options like 7/11, GS25, or CU, we're fortunate to have a dedicated AAFES store on base that provides a variety of goods for our members. If there are specific items you'd like to see stocked, please reach out to the AAFES store managers with your requests; they're always looking for ways to improve the offerings. Also, don't forget that the CAC is open 24/7 and provides food options as well. We believe these resources currently meet the convenience needs of our personnel.

 

Q: Can we add an extra stop on the cultural bus route to Iksan Station for affordable travel?

A: While adding another stop is appealing, the additional travel time to Iksan Station, roughly 1 hour and 10 minutes roundtrip, would significantly extend the overall route duration for all passengers and cut down the number of available roundtrips the bus can accomplish. Furthermore, expanding the route in this way presents a challenge to our existing MWR resources. While we can budget the additional operating costs of approximately $12K, we anticipate the increased travel time would likely lead to reduced ridership and bus pass sales. Therefore, we've decided to maintain the current cultural bus route to best serve the interests of the majority of our riders, given the constraints we face.

Q: What happens to members on permanent profiles with new PT requirements?

A: There is currently no specific fitness guidance addressing the impact of new PT requirements on members with permanent profiles. The only relevant policy is SECWAR's guidance on shaving waivers, which limits approved profiles (including treatment) to 12 months and suggests potential administrative separation for permanent conditions. It is possible a similar approach will be taken with fitness profiles or current policy remains, but official guidance is needed.

Q: When will cold weather gear distribution begin?

A:  Cold Weather Gear is unit-funded as LRS does not receive funding to outfit the Fighter Wing.  We encourage members needing cold weather gear to engage with their Squadron leadership.

 

 

Q:  Now that the COBs fall under the 8th, does that mean that the WRM mission pieces be oversaw and absorbed by local maintenance shops that are currently maintaining the local WRM mission?

A: MMS War Reserve Material maintenance is contracted out; Requested support will be minimal (MMS)

Q: What is the plan for TMO on moving 400+ personnel.

A: The MSG plan for moving personnel tied to S2P2 is a one stop shop for out-processing, details for the plan and timing TBD on MSG Leadership. 

Regarding out-processing from TMO for S2P2 movers, Members will need PCS Orders to out-process with TMO and can PCS utilizing the below options. 

PCS via Carrier Pick-Up (UB-Unaccompanied Baggage / HHG-Household Goods)
Members will need to coordinate with TMO - Personal Property Office to complete all required documents. Members do not need to login to DPS/Move.mil. If departing prior to clearing their dorm of HHG’s, members need to coordinate with ADL for permission to leave items in dorm room. Members will be required to have an assigned Releasing Agent if they leave prior to UB/HHG pick-up. The Releasing Agent will need access to the members room and will need to be present for UB or HHG pick-up and will sign on behalf of the member. Power of Attorney is not required.

PCS via Postal
There will be no reimbursement for Postal PPMs-Personal Procured Moves. All items sent from APO to APO are free of charge. 

PCS via POV
Members will need to coordinate with TMO - Personal Property Office to complete all required documents for moving household goods via POV. The max reimbursement for this type of movement is $200. 

PCS via Bus
Members will need to purchase a bus ticket via Wolf Pack Wheels. They will use their GTC to purchase the ticket and file for reimbursement through their travel voucher with finance.  (LRS)

Q: Are the maintainers stationed at Kunsan AB expected to perform maintenance on ROKAF aircraft or any aircraft we may be hosting during going forward? What kind of training and education should maintainers expect?

A: Potentially. Primary roles will center on War Reserve Material and Arsenal management. Select positions may require cross-servicing qualifications across multiple Mission Design Series, including joint and international aircraft. All personnel will receive appropriate training—delivered through blended digital and hands-on methods—before assuming any duties.

Under Agile Combat Employment, certain capabilities are force multipliers that provide operational flexibility based on mission requirements. Launch/recovery and servicing operations are particularly critical in this regard. Maintainer certification levels will vary by task—some requiring basic familiarization, others demanding advanced proficiency.

This interoperability capability carries inherent risk that we must balance against mission and force protection requirements. While we would certainly employ these capabilities during wartime, regular peacetime training is essential to maintain proficiency.
 

Q: For individuals in maintenance that have not been selected for the Osan move and have extended DEROS or "KAIP'ed" what does the mission look like for the next 2+ years without aircraft?

A: Our immediate priority is completing the transfer of equipment, vehicles, and tools, followed by facility cleanup and turnover to the Civil Engineering Squadron. We must execute this transition meticulously to ensure Kunsan Air Base facilities are mission-ready for incoming temporary assigned forces.

Once facilities transition is complete, we'll develop individualized assignment plans. Depending on each member's circumstances, this may involve assignment to non-traditional roles or DEROS adjustments. These decisions will be made case-by-case based on mission requirements and individual qualifications.

Q: What will the FGS look like if we don’t have any jets to work consistently?

A: Our immediate priority is completing the transfer of equipment, vehicles, and tools, followed by facility cleanup and turnover to the Civil Engineering Squadron. We must execute this transition meticulously to ensure Kunsan Air Base facilities are mission-ready for incoming temporary assigned forces.

A: As MXG Commander, I maintain a 10-hour policy requiring squadron commander approval for any maintainer duty periods exceeding 10 hours tail-lights to tail-lights. Extensions beyond that threshold require individual justification.

Group-wide 12-hour shifts are authorized for exercises and sortie surges. During exercises, I expect all agencies to operate on 12-hour shifts. During surges, shift length depends on organizational ties to the flying mission—not every organization requires extended hours.

I will not request sympathetic 12-hour shifts from peer Group Commanders, as they provide no operational value and unnecessarily burden Airmen. However, I do coordinate flexed hours with DPAD, DFAC, and other mission-critical enablers when operationally justified.

Q: Regarding the new PT standards (2 mile run, PT test 2x a year), will Maintainers have more time to work out in Kunsan?

A: PT failures are not a significant issue in the MXG. When they occur, we develop individualized training plans. The majority of our Airmen score excellent on PT tests, and I expect this trend to continue despite more rigorous standards under the new test—regardless of whether Unit PT is implemented at Kunsan.

Basic fitness is a job requirement. Squadron Commanders remain responsible for their unit's fitness culture and readiness, aligned with leadership intent from squadron level through SECDEF and POTUS.

As Group Commander, I operate under two principles: First, Airmen have no "free time" during duty hours—all time is dedicated to flying, fixing aircraft, or supporting those missions. Second, an Airman's time is our most valuable resource. You are spending your life in service to our nation, and as American treasures, your time must be used wisely. This philosophy drives my 10-hour duty day policy, ensuring 12-hour shifts are deliberate decisions requiring squadron commander approval.

I have complete confidence in both Squadron Commanders to develop and communicate their intent and priorities. Supervisors will allocate time accordingly to meet mission and fitness requirements.

Q: Why is medical declining us from being off the meal card if the dfac food makes people sick? I was told that I needed to make myself sick for 3 months straight in order to be considered. They take $450 out of our pay and i can make my actual good food with it which is healthier and easily consumable for my well being. We don’t make much money here and I have been really struggling with the outcome. This has taken a toll on my mental health. (also tasked to MSG).

A: Medical is not the final approval authority for BAS waiver, however in order for medical to write a statement that a BAS waiver is required based on a medical condition, a documented medical condition, such as celiac disease or ischemic bowel disorder, must be validated with appropriate medical testing.  Statements based on preference cannot be supported as this would also make the member potentially non-deployable and unfit for duty as it is a requirement to be able to subsist on field rations.

Q: Will you all be attending the Hootenanny this Friday from 9PM - 11PM @ The Nest?

A: We attended and it was great!

Q: What is the new leadership team doing to counter act Kunsan’s high SA and DV rates?

A: No significant increase or decrease in the sexual assault (SA) reports in the past three years. The new leadership continues to create a climate free of sexual violence by setting, exemplifying, and enforcing standards of discipline. The leadership is keenly focused on continuing support and monitoring to prevent future sexual assault and domestic violence (DV). Leadership is actively engaged in supporting a change to harmful behaviors and encourages sexual assault and domestic prevention year-round.  SAPR is providing ongoing Face to Face training throughout the year to include Monthly outreach engagement events and unit visits. The campaign is to increase awareness of SA and resources to enhance response. - SARC

Q: Back in the States, we had an interaction between the community and the military members to help out the community, but there is no interaction here. Is there a way to start and bridge the gap between the Korean communities and our military members to help build positive relationships between the two?

A: 8 FW/PA is responsible for managing community engagement events, and we agree that there should be more. Over the past year, we have hosted small groups to receive a mission briefing and engage with an F-16 on the flight line. Additionally, 2-3 times a year, we advertise day-long cultural tours off-base for members to participate in. This fall, we are actively planning to invite community groups to visit Kunsan more frequently and seek out opportunities for Wolf Pack personnel to get off base and get engaged. Q: The buzz words ‘legacy’ and ‘heritage’ are constantly brought up regarding the Wolf Pack, however, where can one learn of the legacy and heritage? I recently tried to seek out the base historian, and learned Kunsan does not have one. Are there any initiatives to make the Wolf Pack’s legacy and heritage for accessibly known?

A: There are initiatives to mobilize the Wolf Pack’s heritage! For example, the 8th Operational Support Squadron recently hosted a “Crud” Tourney, where they explained how to play a game that is common in the pilot community to expand knowledge to the rest of the Wolf Pack. There are other initiatives in development over the coming months to preserve and promote our heritage, and we look forward to sharing more soon. Q: Will there be a re-eval event 30 days after of the new community standards go into effect to assess if they are achieving the desired effects of not?

A: Not necessarily a re-eval event at a specific time, but there is always an opportunity to update policy as the environment & situation changes. Could be because a policy/rule isn't achieving the desired effect, or has caused unintended side effects. - WOLF 

Q: Chief, are you taking advantage of the ODR or CAC tours while here?

A: I have not yet, but I will. I'm looking forward to the ski trips this winter! - WOLF CHIEF

Q: Do we still have to wait to the end of each month to PCS? Since most of us won’t have a turnover at Kunsan due to the super squadron, will the policy on departing before the last 10 days of the month change?

A: For Super Squadron Phase 2 PCS's, no. The specific PCS timing will be driven by mission requirements at Osan. For normal rotation PCS's, yes - no change to AFPC policy there. - WOLF

Q: Why does this change come now? When the US is preparing for potential conflict with other global super powers. Why is there constant changes now. There have been changes to the way MX operates, and now the way this base operates, seems like poorly timed changes.

A: Evolving character of war dictates that the nature of warfare is always changing, demanding new approaches to training, technology, and operational concept. Embracing change is not a choice, it is a necessity. Change is part of military life. The changes at Kunsan have been in the works for a few years now.  Super Squadron Phase One (S2P1) first started last year when we sent F-16s to Osan. Super Squadron Phase Two (S2P2) is currently on going. We just took on the Collocated Operating Bases (COBs) to further robust their capabilities. We will continue to work as a Wolf Pack team to make improvements and change as the situation and circumstances dictate.  

Q: Will we still be getting a steady rotation of personnel to fill vacant spots?

A: To support an on-time start for the Super Squadron Phase 2 test, Air Force Personnel Center is strategically diverting talent from bases across the globe to Osan. As a result, the initial assessment of personnel departing Kunsan for the test has shrunk from approximately 300 to approximately 60. These 60 Airmen will see assignments to Osan loaded as a “Continuation of Tour,” to preserve their original DEROS and follow-on assignments. AFPC will fill positions as needed. Many billets (spots) will move from Kunsan to Osan, meaning their backfills will flow to Osan as well. Keep in mind the Basing Action process is still underway, and is pre-decisional. We are still in a Test phase for now. - WOLF

Q: Wolf-Chief, I see you’re a golfer. What is your handicap and how far do you hit your 6 iron (carry not total distance)?

A:  From the red tees, my handicap is about 11. From the whites, it is around 14-15. I don't have a 6 iron in the bag, but I do have a 6 hybrid. That carries about 150 yds. My 5 iron carries about 150. Come see for yourself! - WOLF CHIEF

Q: I imagine this moves comes with significant changes to unit METLs and Doc statements. Can you explain the process here? Are MAJCOM functionals making amendments already? Is there a timeline?

A: That process will happen after the final Basing Action decision, when we have an answer on whether the Test will become permanent. - WOLF

Q: Are there any additional opportunities to offer our efforts to the s2p2 where we can get additional exposure to the Wing? Planning, projects, etc.

A: Yes! Lots of ways to get involved in Wing initiatives. Our Heritage OPT lead is Maj  McKay McLaren (mckay.mclaren.1@us.af.mil) Our Quality of Life Task Force lead is Lt Jacob Oesterle (jacob.oesterle.1@us.af.mil). We are often looking for POCs to take charge of Wing-wide events - let your supervisor know you're hungry for more of those opportunities, and encourage them to submit your name for consideration! - WOLF

Q: What does the P in S2P2 stand for?

A: The Full Acryomn for S2P2 is "Super Squadron Phase 2". We are moving into Phase 2 of the Super Squadron test. 

Q: What's the way forward for the people remaining here. What's the new mission and ops tempo projected to look like? Are there any plans to bring a new squadron to Kunsan in the future?

A: Our mission does not change; we will still Defend the Base; Accept Follow on Forces; Take the Fight North;  Develop the Team & Connect to Heritage. In the short term, you'll see even more transient forces here - aircraft will base here to participate in exercises (flying exercises and base-wide ATSO exercises), and rotational forces will stage out of Kunsan. In the long term, there's always a possibility of permanently assigned aircraft. 

Q: The new Korean president expressed his disdain towards US presence here, what will that look like for us in the future?

A: We are guests in the Republic of Korea, and as such, it would be inappropriate to speculate on political matters under discussion. However, our mission of defense has not changed, and we must continue our work to protect the security, freedom, and prosperity for the U.S and our ROK allies. - PA

Q: Why does the local population occasionally protest our presence, when without it North Korea would not hesitate to “reunite” the one Korea?

A: The Republic of Korea is a vibrant democracy, where citizens have freedom of speech and assembly - they're exercising their rights to express an opinion! - WOLF

Q: If Osan is going to become a normal assignment, is that also the future for Kunsan?

A: In the long term, we may see tour normalization and other changes that make Kunsan and Osan more similar. 8 FW leadership is investigating the actions we should take now to prepare for and achieve that future. - PA

Q: Was it said earlier in the brief that we are going to have a two week-long exercise? If so, why will we need to do that and what will it look like?

A: The two-week exercise is FREEDOM FLAG, a flying exercise similar to RED FLAG. Other units will bring aircraft to Kunsan; we'll brief and debrief and mission plan here. It will provide great US-Korea bilateral flying training. It will NOT be an "exercise" for the rest of the base. The rest of the base might simply see different types of aircraft taking off, or a few more people in the BX at lunchtime. - WOLF

Q:  What does ADCON look like during S2P2, specifically, who is the senior rater for the folks going to Osan (EFDP, strats, demotion authority, etc)?

A: Airmen moving from within 8 MSG will become part of 51 MSG; same with 8 MDG people who PCS to 51 MDG. At some point in the next couple months (working on specific timing with AFPC), the 35 FS will transfer to the 51 OG and the 35 FGS will transfer to the 51 MXG. 

Q: Can we look into approving single ear wear headphones while walking around. Also can we revisit what are authorized locations for headphone use outside of gym. Why can’t we wear headphones when in civilian clothes? Regarding the rumors of banning Bluetooth in civilian clothes. If true, could we revisit allowing 1? Huge boost to morale while maintaining safety?

A: Headphone wear is not authorized on roadways (except cross walks). They're also never authorized while riding a bike, scooter, or driving a vehicle. And they're not authorized while WALKING in uniform. See Community Standards para. 2.3.2 for details. The roadway rule is a safety concern; the rule about earbuds in uniform is to make sure people are spring-loaded to greet each other in uniform and render appropriate customs and courtesies rather than being lost in their own world. Always open to reconsider as the situation changes or we learn (data-driven evidence is helpful!), but for now the standards say NO headphones/earbuds while walking in uniform, and NO headphones/earbuds on roadways. - WOLF

Q: Is the 2100 all call set up because you wanted wing Wednesday

A: Haha! I do love Wing Wednesday! Actually the 2100 Wolf Call was to accommodate our Airman not working day shift and not interrupt their sleep schedules. We're also offering a 2100 Road to War brief before Wing exercises for the same reason. -WOLF

Q: Can we please have the OTS results!!!!! Thank you in advance. Other / Misc 37 OTS results? when are we going to get those results released?

A: The OTS results just came out. I hope you were selected or know someone who was!

Q: Will there be time in the work day to do group PT?

A: Not tracking any changes in AFIs; unit leadership has the best visibility on how to structure the work day for their people. 

Q: Will the community standards and policies change? For example members to PCS after the 20th of their DEROS month.

A: Community Standards have been updated and published. “8th Fighter Wing Permanent Change of Station Arrival and Departure Policy”  remains in place. 

Q: Jersey fridays? What possibilities do we have for Jersey Fridays/ Morale Shirt wear

A: Jersey Fridays will not be returning for the workday. However, we love the jersey cutlure and will authorize jerseys at celebrations and special events. You'll see the Wolf Triad in jerseys whenever they're authorized. - WOLF

Q: Why do we exercise so often so hard, when once a quarter would suffice?  What makes you say once a quarter would suffice? What do you think the purpose of the exercises are, and how do you know we can meet those goals in one exercise a quarter? With the mass amount of people moving to Osan, do we still need 4-5 exercises a year!??? How will our exercises be affected by the moves to Osan is it a priority to move the aircraft first or do both and be prepared with the exercises?

A: We use the word "exercise" a lot...sometimes it means a full week-long base level exercise (in chem gear, etc.). Sometimes it means a flying exercise (like RED FLAG or FREEDOM FLAG). Sometimes it's a couple hours (typhoon prep exercise, or active shooter exercise). We'll do a better job messaging that so it's clear. We have a major wing-wide week-long exercise in August, and then no more of those scheduled for the rest of this calendar year. More to follow on the long-term plan for the rest of the year.  We are constantly adjusting our exercises based on the threat and our OPLAN taskings, and based on what we learn/what areas we need to work on. We'lll keep the communication flowing about the exercise objectives and long-term plan - you can expect to hear that in the ROAD TO WAR briefs at a minimum. -WOLF

 

Q: How would you, Wolf 2 and other assigned pilots here (if any) keep their flight hours when the jets are in Osan.

A: Kunsan F-16 assigned pilots will maintain flight currency and proficiency by periodically going TDY to Osan. They will also fly Osan jets here when they practice flying out of Kunsan, and utilize the simulators at Kunsan.  

Q: Is there a possibility that Kunsan will take on an ISR posture?

A: With the movement of F16s from Kunsan to Osan, the 8 FW will continue to operate as a primary exercise and rotational force bed-down location for U.S. air component forces in ROK.  It will maintain active flightline operations and facilities, in addition to maintianin war reserve material and munitions at multiple locations across South Korea. The key takeaway is Kunsan will remain capable of accepting any kind of follow-on force.

Q: What are the key ways Kunsan AB is enhancing interoperability with the Republic of Korea Air Force and our joint partners to ensure seamless operations in contingencies?

A: The 8 FW remains committed to ensuring peace and security on the Korean Peninsula. We will continue to support ROKAF missions at Kunsan and be ready to integrate with any joint partner. Kunsan will host a Flag level exercise in the fall known as Freedom Flag. During this week, joint and allied partners will participate in a week long flying exercise demonstrating robust interoperability needed to project airpower anywhere.
