KUNSAN AIR BASE, Republic of Korea -- An F-16 Fighting Falcon assigned to the 8th Fighter Wing here experienced an in-flight emergency over the West Sea and crashed at approximately 8:41 a.m. today.
The pilot ejected safely and was recovered at around 9:30 a.m. He is conscious and was transported to a medical facility for assessment. The wing worked closely with U.S. and Republic of Korea mission partners to recover the pilot.
“We are very thankful to the Republic of Korea rescue forces and all of our teammates who made the swift recovery of our pilot possible,” said Col. Matthew C. Gaetke, 8th FW commander. “Now we will shift our focus to search and recovery of the aircraft.”
Information on the cause of the in-flight emergency will not be made available until the conclusion of thorough safety and accident investigations.
군산 기지, 대한 민국 – 미 공군 제 8 전투 비행단 소속 F-16 파이팅 팔콘 한 대가 오늘 오전 8시 41분경 서해상에서 비행중 응급 상황 후 추락했습니다.
조종사는 안전하게 탈출했으며, 오전 9시 30분경 구조 되었습니다. 조종사는 의식이 있는 상태로 조사를 받기 위해 의료 시설로 이송 되었습니다. 제 8 전투 비행단은 조종사를 구조하기 위해 대한 민국 임무 파트너들과 긴밀히 협조하였습니다.
“우리 조종사를 신속하게 구조해주신 모든 동료들과 대한 민국 구조대원들께 매우 감사드립니다,” 제 8 전투 비행단장 매튜 캣키 대령(Col. Mattheew G. Gaeke)이 말했습니다. “현재 저희는 항공기의 수색 구조에 집중할 것입니다.”
철저한 안전 사고 조사가 마무리 될 때 까지 비행중 응급 상황 발생의 원인은 발표되지 않을 것입니다.
