KUNSAN AIR BASE, Republic of Korea – Kunsan Air Base will close its runway for military and commercial flight operations, 1 April through late August, 2023.
To repair and replace about 1500 of the runway’s concrete slabs, the 8th Operations Group will relocate flight operations to Osan Air Base, ROK through the duration of the closure.
“In order to preserve USAF capabilities here at Kunsan, we have to take this time and invest in our infrastructure,” said Col. Henry “Wolf 62” Jeffress, 8th Fighter Wing commander. “Temporarily moving flight operations up to Osan won’t stop the Wolf Pack… whether we are here at Kunsan or deploying to Osan, location doesn’t matter because the Wolf Pack will always remain focused on executing our mission.”
Along with aircraft, Kunsan will be deploying 600 personnel to Osan to ensure the Wolf Pack’s ability to project the combat air power necessary for peace and stability on the peninsula.
“Kunsan and the 8th Fighter Wing have long played an integral role in the region. This runway repair is essential to ensuring the tradition of protecting the ROK and its 51 million people can continue in the future,” Jeffress said.
This is not the first large-scale repair to Kunsan’s runway. The last closure and repair occurred in 2014, and since then the 8th Civil Engineer Squadron’s “Dirt Boyz” continuously maintain the pavement to ensure safe flying operations for the US and ROK’s fighter aircraft.
“While time consuming, the repair and replacement of runway slabs is to be expected as they wear from aircraft use and natural elements,” said Lt. Col. John Marshall, 8th CES commander. “Our Airmen have done what they can— an excellent job I might add— at using in-house techniques to keep the flightline operable but the flightline [concrete] like any other asset has its own service life.”

군산 기지, 대한 민국 – 군산 미공군 기지는 2023년 4월 1일부터 8월 말까지 군사/민간 항공의 비행 운행을 중단합니다.
약 1500개의 활주로 콘크리트 상판을 수리하고 교체하기 위해, 미 공군 제 8 작전 전대는 활주로 폐쇄 기간 동안 대한 민국, 오산 기지에서 비행 임무를 수행할 것입니다.
“군산 기지에 있는 주한 미군의 기량을 유지하기 위해, 시간을 내어 저희 공공시설에 투자를 해야만 합니다,” 62대 울프, 헨리 제프리 미 공군 제 8 전투비행단장이 말했습니다. “오산기지로 임시 비행임무 이동은 울프팩을 멈추게 하지 않습니다… 우리가 군산기지에 있거나 오산기지로 이동해있을때, 장소에 관계없이 울프팩은 임무수행에 집중할 것입니다.”
한반도의 평화와 안정에 필요한 공중 전투력을 실행하기 위한 울프팩의 능력을 유지하기 위해, 항공기와 더불어 군산기지의 600 여명 인원들이 오산기지에 파견될것입니다.
“군산 기지 미 공군 제 8 전투 비행단은 이 지역에서 오랫동안 중요한 역할을 담당해 오고 있으며, 추후에도 지속적으로 대한민국과 5100만명의 국민을 보호하는 군산 기지의 전통을 이어나가기 위해 활주로 보수 공사는 필수적인 일입니다,” 제프리 단장이 말했습니다.
이번이 군산 기지의 첫번째 대규모 활주로 공사는 아닙니다. 2014년 마지막 폐쇄와 보수 공사 이후로, 제 8 시설대대는 한미 전투기의 안전한 비행임무를 위해 지속적으로 활주로 노면 점검을 하고 있습니다.
“시간이 걸리지만,항공기 사용과 자연적 요인들로 인한 마모가 일어나기 때문에 활주로 바닥의 보수와 교체는 예상 되는 일입니다,” 제 8 시설대대장 존 마셜 중령이 말했습니다. “우리 공군 장병들은 활주로를 지속적으로 운행 가능하도록 하기 위해 내부 기술을 이용해 훌륭하게 임무를 수행하고 있습니다. 그러나 다른 자산과 유사하게 활주로 (콘크리트)도 자체 사용기한이 있습니다.”
