KUNSAN AIR BASE, Republic of Korea -- U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. David Tappan, a native of Brooksville, Florida and 8th Operations Support Squadron noncommissioned in charge of intelligence analysis, was awarded the 8th Fighter Wing’s Pride of the Pack for fulfilling a role beyond his rank for over 12 months, excelling as the Wing Intel Superintendent.
Under Tech. Sgt. Tappan’s leadership, his team partnered with 7th Air Force and Pacific Air Forces during Super Squadron Phase II, redistributing 70% of Kunsan’s intel Airmen across the peninsula, and then reestablishing the requirements and posturing the shop for their return of those Airmen and two F-16 Squadrons.
During base exercise Beverly Sentinel 26-4, he served as the intel Wing Inspection Team member, dedicating 42 hours in creating a holistic scenario for all 8 FW personnel, generating over 50 injects to test intelligence analyst proficiency and providing real time simulated threat warning.
Despite low manning issues, Tappan continued filing multiple roles in the unit, completing daily operations, accomplishing admin taskers from across PACAF, and ensuring our Kunsan’s security program is up to standards.
A dedicated problem solver, Tappan worked tirelessly to find creative solutions to fill manning gaps. Through networking with other Intelligence Units on the peninsula and exploring the use of Military Personnel Appropriation Days, he successfully requisitioned three augmentee personnel for future base exercises to bolster the intel shop for 24-hour operations.
Finally, Tech Sgt. Tappan provides mentorship for his teammates up and down the chain of command and makes it his mission to welcome and take care of inbound Airman arriving at the Wolf Pack.
