KUNSAN AIR BASE, Republic of Korea -- U.S. Air Force Col. Daryl McCoy, assumed command of the 8th Maintenance Group from Col. Blair W. Byrem, during a change of command ceremony at Kunsan Air Base, Republic of Korea, June 4, 2026.
Col. Kathryn K. Gaetke, 8th Fighter Wing commander, presided over the ceremony and the event was attended by leaders and Airmen across the 8th FW and the ROK Air Force’s 38th Fighter Group.
“The fleet is better than it's ever been. We did a bunch of cutting-edge things in flight generation, power projection, exercises, doing some things out over the ocean, but what I am really proud of is how we all took care of each other,” said Byrem. “That's the thing that matters most. You are a national treasure, you took care of each other.”
During the ceremony Byrem received a Legion of Merit medal for his accomplishment and commitment as a commander of the 8th MXG. Additionally, Byrem was presented with a certificate of commendation by ROKAF Col. Lee, Kyeong-Soo, 38th FG commander, in recognition for his dedicated service in protecting the airspace of the Republic of Korea.
Rooted in military tradition dating back to the Roman era, change of command ceremonies symbolize the formal transfer of authority and responsibility while reinforcing continuity of leadership, mission readiness and trust within the unit.
“To the maintainers of the legendary Wolf Pack, I couldn't be more excited to be standing here with you today. Of all my assignments, my time on Kunsan is one that I cherish the most. I deeply appreciate your tireless work to have the combat credible forces required to deter and win in a high-end fight,” said McCoy. “As I take command today, my expectations are simple and direct. We will take care of each other, and we will ensure this wing remains lethal and ready to take the fight North at a moment's notice. I'm incredibly humbled, honored to stand here as your commander, and look forward to seeing you out in the patch. Let’s get to work!”
