Base tax center now open

Ten volunteers have been helping Airmen here with their taxes since the center opened Jan. 23.

Last year, the tax center filed 617 federal and 34 state tax returns saving individuals almost $90,000 in filing charges.

All volunteers have attended 30 hours of training courses conducted by the IRS and must pass an IRS-administered exam, officials said. Volunteers have taken basic, intermediate and military specific training courses.

For those interested in signing up for an appointment at the tax center, here is what they should know:

- All active duty and SOFA status civilians are eligible for this service.
- Taxes are prepared at no charge.
- Those making appointments need their W-2's, the correct names and social security numbers for their family members and any other pertinent filing documents such as tax information from investments or a power of attorney (IRS Form 2848) from their spouse if filing a joint return.
- Taxes will be signed digitally and filed with the IRS electronically.
- Appointments are scheduled for 30 minutes.
- The tax center is located in the Legal Office, third floor, Bldg. 755.
-Taxes are done by appointment only. Appointments are available Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., excluding holidays and down days.
- Appointments are on a first come, first serve basis.
