Fire Prevention Week is March 23 through 27.

8th Fighter Wing leadership is urging all Wolf Pack members to be aware of their environment and help prevent fires on Kunsan.

Two recent fires at separate Pacific Air Forces installations, one here at Kunsan, highlighted the fact that fire inspections needed to be completed more than annually. Because of this, base facility managers, unit safety representatives and first sergeants will be conducting a 100 percent fire safety inspection on all facilities throughout the week--to include dormitory rooms.

According to the 8th Civil Engineer Squadron Fire Department a common problem observed, especially in dorm rooms, is daisy chaining power strips. Using multiple power strips plugged into each other overloads the circuits causing more current to be drawn. This generates heat and can eventually lead to a fire. Members can reduce this risk by rearranging their work or living area to avoid the need for so many electrical items in one place. If more outlets are needed an Air Force form 332 can be submitted to CES. Officials also stressed the need for members to avoid plugging heat producing appliances--such as refrigerators, microwave ovens, heaters, etc--into power strips. Instead they should be plugged directly into outlets.

Other items the Fire Department urged members to be aware of are cooking in dorms, using candles and smoking--all of which are prohibited in members' rooms.
In order to educate base members, the Fire Department and Wing Safety Office will have a display booth set up at the entrance to the Base Exchange every day during the week from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Personnel manning the booth will have informational handouts and a display n the improper use of surge protectors.

Fire Department and Safety officials urge all Kunsan members to take a look around their work and living areas, and identify any potential problems.
