With summer approaching and warmer weather on the horizon, more and more Kunsan Airmen are expected to start riding bicycles on base.

As the transportation mode of choice, Kunsan Air Base boasts a large bicycle to vehicle ratio; roughly 12-to-1 according to Investigator Eric Sterman, 8th Security Forces Squadron NCO in charge of Investigations.

Due to vehicle ownership restrictions on Kunsan AB, bicycles are somewhat of a commodity to service members, being the only set of "wheels" most Airmen will have while stationed in the Republic of Korea.

Security

Earlier this month, the 8th SFS conducted one of their semi-annual bicycle roundups on Kunsan Air Base. The purpose of the "roundup" was to collect unregistered, unsecured and abandoned bicycles in accordance with United States Forces Korea Regulation 190-1, "Motor Vehicle Traffic Supervision," which requires owners to register their bicycle with the Security Forces Pass and Registration Office.

To register a bicycle, members must report to the Security Forces Pass and Registration Office, located in Bldg. 590, with the bicycle's color, serial number, manufacturer and model number.

SFS Pass and Registration Office hours of operation are Monday through Friday, 8a.m. to 4p.m. Once registered, owners will receive a decal which must be affixed to the bicycle.

Safety

In accordance with 8FWI 36-2901, "Kunsan Air Base Community Standards," bicyclists on Kunsan must adhere to certain safety regulations while riding. According to the 8th Fighter Wing Safety Office, Airmen should pay particular attention to the following items:
  • Reflective gear during hours of darkness, regardless of uniform or civilian dress
  • Properly secured and approved helmet
  • Protective equipment should only be worn while actually riding a bicycle, not between work center or dormitories to bicycles
  • Headphones, to include any form of portable entertainment, are prohibited from being used while on roadways
  • USKF regulations, which also affect bicyclist in conjunction with the community standards
